A fellow h/gun shooting friend of mind said "I hope B.C. as the greenest of all greens they can imagine". Which tells you he is mad at the Federal & Provincial waste of our tax dollars for something he will not attend, like so many others.

Sydney set a standard for green games, but that was a summer event. How did Beijing do in 2008 and Turin in 2006 (Winter) for recycling and greening of activities?

Rain, rain, go away. It is melting snow in chilly air as a prelude to the Colorado Low system bringing more cold and snow to Central and Eastern Canada. Gee, thanks... :) The Colorado Low ought to reverse course and go to British Columbia.

That Colorado Low brought icy chilly winds (nice horizontal wind gusts from the West) and snow (dusting or squall) but not the expected heap of snow this morning. Ice remains on the ground under that dusting of snow. Noticed who cleaned their vehicles and who did not while travelling on the highways--snow blew out quickly.

MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO, Peru - Skies cleared over the fabled Machu Picchu citadel Thursday, speeding the evacuation of thousands of stranded tourists, many of whom were left to eat from communal pots and sleep outdoors after flooding and mudslides cut access to the area. Helicopters had taken 700 people by mid-afternoon from the remote village, the closest to the ancient Inca ruins 8,000 feet up in the Andes mountains.

Amazing thing is people will have a home built on a dangerous part of the land & hope for the best. Some California people are good examples for sure as they seem to be cought in fire to rain areas that end their homes, but will build AGAIN on the same spot or something similiar to it.

The floodwaters in that Peruvian village-scary sight with all that power taking out solid things nearby. I read about the luggage porters who are effectively stranded during this time as usual route is blocked by soldiers along the river. The price gouging sounds unreal for all concerned and having no money does not help.

A moderate, magnitude 5.2 earthquake in Sichuan, south-west China, has brought down at least 100 homes, killing one person and injuring 11, officials say.

US earthquake monitors report that the tremor struck at 0537 local time (2137 GMT Saturday) 35km (20m) south-east of Suining, at a depth of 18.6km (11.6m). Houses collapsed in the Moxi area of Suining, a city of 3.5 million people. A magnitude 8 quake in Sichuan on 12 May 2008 left at least 87,000 people dead or missing.

Oh, not another earthquake in Sichuan! Not everyone got rehoused into permanent structures from the 2008 quake; only some people did get housing about 1 year later.

California still in drought after storms
Andrew Edwards, Staff Writer

It's too early too say that California is out of its drought, but water officials are happy to get the snowfall that fell over the Sierra Nevada mountains during the last round of storms.
The California Department of Water Resources announced Friday that field and electronic inspections of mountain snowpack revealed that water content in Sierra snows was at 115 percent of normal levels.

At the same time in 2009, snowpack supplies were at only 61 percent of normal levels.

California is a split-weather state in the past few years: some parts are toasting, some are soaking and others are cold. The toasting almost seems like a regular event and it must take up a budget for firefighting.

A Radio-Canada series, Pour L'Amour De Ciel/Canada Above and Beyond, mentioned that two of Quebec's water planes were rented by San Diego to combat fires in the area (don't remember what year). Amazing camera angles of planes in flight or in water-scoop mode for that segment.

Back in the late 40s to early 50s in mountaineering we studied the routes of climbers some yrs back, to actually looked so closely at their B&W photos taken prior to WWI & after WWII. To us they were the ORIGINALS so yes you could personally ask them any question at their older age then more then willing to tell you parts about their routes for you see in many mountins there were only 2 or 4 routes to the summit.

We also studied the glaciers they made a base camp on or simply trecked across it for we would do the same when going after the summit. So yes the glacers to snow patches were still as thier photos showed. Then in the early 60s I started to see photos of the same glaciers & they were dramatically smaller in size to in many cases the so called "snow patches" that were on the side of the mtns back in the times of the older climbers to use as well & THEY WERE OFTEN GONE.

I can say this to others, that are against said melting conditions ONLY I have personally seen the no change in WWI B&W photos to the same in the late 40s to early 50s & NOW can see the changes. They tell my I wet behind my ears or do not know what I am talking about. Only this is something like three generations of mountaineers that have seen the above or are now finding they have shrunk or no longer there sort of on the sides of some mountains.

True I am sort of saying that twice in the above, but YES it is happening unfortunately.
